The saddest story in history is that after the first century, the church in effect “returned to Egypt”. They created their own version of “canon law” and went back under the old system of law that Jesus came to deliver us from. After 325 AD, when Rome made Christianity the state religion, the return to Egypt was consummated. This initiated the dark ages and the church, which was supposed to be the city on the hill bringing light to the nations, instead brought a thousand years of darkness and misery to the planet. They systematically kept people from education and knowledge, fearing that if the people could learn for themselves they would lose control over them. They invented the concept of hell, where those who didn’t toe the line would be sent by an angry God to suffer intolerable pain forever and ever with no hope of escape. They did this to control people. When anyone did challenge them or if they got some light or revelation, they were brought before the inquisition and tortured horribly or murdered in the name of fighting heresy. The greatest mass murder in history, the Spanish Inquisition, was carried out by the church that was supposed to be the city on a hill and a light to the nations. Jesus had come to bring light and life, and instead the church brought darkness and death.
There ware rays of hope through the ages. Small groups arose. They carried the truth and kept it alive. Most were killed by the church or governments controlled by the church. The Huguenots, Anabaptists, Quakers, Puritans. Sure many of these were guilty of their own atrocities. No excuses. The enlightenment movements came and tried to bring their own light, imperfect as it was.
Then finally after over 2000 years, some began to see truth again. Some began to really understand why Jesus had come, what He came to bring and do. That it’s not about law or an angry God or hell. That it’s about grace and truth and love. That’s we really CAN love one another! That we really CAN love even our enemies. That God is our Papa, and that He loves us AND likes us! That the church really can be the city on a hill Jesus spoke of, bringing light to the nations! It’s a growing vision. It’s a new hope. The shaking off of 1500 years of deception and lies has not nor will it continue to be an easy process. But with technology like the internet in the hands of regular people, we have the best chance in history of prevailing! But Papa will not allow us to bring Egypt with us. He will not. We must shake off all remnants of the old religion of law. The old order is failing. It knows it’s days are numbered. Who will be with us? Who will shake it off and move forward into a tomorrow that is bright and shining and that light to the nations? We are closer than any past generation has ever been. Don’t stop now. Don’t let them get to you. Keep pressing forward. Young people, take the wheel!
